Our guys have been Scotch connoisseurs for some time, but I swear that isn’t why we are moving to Scotland. Valerie and Tyler are no doubt enjoying some of the range of spirits Scotland has to offer from their place in Edinburgh, but meanwhile Scott and I have been keeping it American with some good Ol’ Kentucky bourbon while we are here in the US.
I’m a little bit obsessed with the American South, lately. I’ve spent my fair share of time in the Southwest, but I’ve never really spent time in the eastern half of my own country. Aside from a visit down South, my travel wish list for the US includes visits to the Northwest and to Florida, just to start.
Alas, we have not been traveling much right now, waiting as we (still) are for visa paperwork, but this cocktail is an American travel wish in a glass. Inspired by those places Stateside I’d like to visit, but perfect for the quickly rising temps here in the desert of the Southwest. This drink will cool you all the way through this year's summer campouts and barbecues.
Orange Maple Bourbon Iced Tea
Makes one glass
2 tsp. Real Maple Syrup
1 oz. Bourbon of choice
1-2 orange slices
8-12 oz. Prepared Iced tea of choice
In a low-ball glass or pint mason jar muddle an orange slice with maple syrup. Add ice and pour over bourbon and then top off glass with iced tea. Stir, garnish with additional orange slice, and serve.
Make this with fine Vermont maple syrup and the best Bourbon you can find. We like Tejava tea for the rich flavor when we don’t feel like brewing our own. Also, we used heirloom oranges and the result was out of this world.
