Whether it's a weekend trip to Grandma's or an epic international upheaval, here are a few tried and true tips for creating peaceful, happy zones of familiarity for littles on the move.
The right travel bed /playpen
SO much hinges on good rest while traveling, so do yourself, your kids and fellow travelers a favor by selecting a sleeper right for your circumstance. Not all travel beds are created equal! We chose the Lotus Everywhere Travel Crib by Guava Family for its generous size, ease of use and super light weight.
Create a soundscape
It's no secret how kids are mesmerized by ambient noise. Rain, vacuum cleaners, howling wind, Enya (heh), etc. I use an app called Sleep Pillow on 3 of our iOS devices (iPhone, iMac and iPad) to maintain a consistent barrier for outside noise no matter where we may roam.
Concoct a signature scent
By combining only a few drops of essential oil and water in an amber spray bottle, you can make your own comforting scent and use it anywhere. Hotel linens, airplane seats, rental cars... just imagine the possibilities! My family *loves* our combo of rose and lavender. It's so mild and lovely, I also use it to smooth the kid's hair before brushing and set my makeup. The bottle I use was purchased on Amazon in a 5-pack for under $10 and meets TSA standards.
While it's a given you wouldn't leave home without his favorite stuffed animal or blankie, I like to kick it up a notch for longer trips. For example, we brought both of the boy's Klean Kanteens that they use every single day at home and on the go. I also put together an art pack full of coloring books, stickers and crayons that we began using before leaving the states. Other ideas include a familiar pillowcase, eating utensils, favorite bath toy, etc.
